Bridging the AI regulation gap

Being so fast to freeze LLM regulation with the #AIAct, Europe might be at the same time shooting a bullet in its foot (to put it mildly), but also missing a unique opportunity to create a transatlantic framework.

As one of the main negotiator of the DSA and DMA, I do know how important regulation is to curb the collateral damages of technology. But the European Parliament proposal on the AI act will make one thing certain : that Europe is (once again) not part of a major technological breakthrough — down the road, at the cost of its competitiveness, its growth and its independence.

On the other hand, for once, the debate (and the risks) seems to be mature enough, on the other side of the Atlantic, to foster a real debate on the need for things like alignment prerequisits or accountability rules.

Europe and the US should be seizing that unique opportunity to create a common framework. Not a new set of non-binding smooth ethical principles, but a real level playing field.
